Healthy Lake Program

Lake properties with consistently high water quality tend to increase in value, provide endless opportunities for recreational pursuits, and support an abundant variety of wildlife.
Managing both water quality and limiting the growth of invasive species is essential for the ecosystem as well as sustaining strong real estate values in cottage communities.
Big Cedar Lake is at the forefront of developing strategies to maintain a healthy balance of its ecology and recreational use.
The BCLSA is working hard to limit the spread of invasive species that threaten recreational activities and the health of our wildlife. Today, Starry Stonewort is a key focus. Thus far, we have avoided its spread and the choking effects seen on other Kawartha lakes.
Currently, we enjoy excellent water quality, clarity, and cleanliness. Boating, swimming, and fishing are enjoyed without significant hindrance of weeds in the pristine water of Big Cedar.

Water Quality Testing

Water quality testing and monitoring continues to be a key BCLSA initiative. Over the last number of years results show the lake is healthy.

In addition to regular testing, the BCLSA continues to participate in three other water quality programs:
1. Lake Partner Program measuring water clarity, phosphorus, calcium and nitrogen.
2. Trent University Study.
3. Climate Change Project coordinated by the Kawartha Lake Stewards Association (KLSA).

Tire Disposal Program

Old tires leach harmful chemicals into the ground water and lake with negative effects on natural habitat and humans.
The BCLSA sponsors a Tire Disposal Program to rid Big Cedar Lake of submersed tires and tires that are degrading on the shoreline. The program is implemented by volunteer members.
If you would like help with removal and dump runs for safe disposal, please reach out to Leo DeSorcy at ldesorcy@aol.com
If you have neighbors who have tires and may not be members of BCLSA please reach out to them and let them know that the BCLSA can provide assistance.

Maintain a Natural Shoreline

Water quality and the health of the lake is directly impacted by changes to the natural shoreline. Understand why natural shorelines improve the quality of Big Cedar Lake. Watershed Canada runs a program to help cottage owners make a plan, select plant material and do the planting for naturalization.

About the Association

Established in 2011, the organization first came together to fight the invasive species Eurasian Water Milfoil.

Since that time, the beauty of Big Cedar Lake, the joy it brings us and the need to ensure its long-term sustainability has kept the BCLSA together.

We are a non-profit organization and open to all property owners (seasonal or permanent residents) on the lake.

The Association is governed by a Board of caring volunteers who are elected each year by BCLSA members at the Annual General Meeting.

We welcome you and hope you will become a member.
